2019 was a rough year for data breaches in senior living. More than 60 facilities were impacted by a single software company breach in June. The average cost of a data breach in the health care industry was $6.45 million, according to the 2019 Cost of a Data Breach Study from Ponemon Institute and IBM Security. 2020’s COVID-19 crisis has seen the temporary loosening of HIPAA rules by the HHS Office for Civil Rights, to accelerate telehealth adoption in senior living.
